My mom had it so I will too - the no 1 top myth about disease.

Have you ever said this yourself?

Or maybe heard another person say it to you?

Whenever I hear someone close by say this, my ears prick up big time. It is one of the most significant myths that I used to tell myself and one that I am determined to bust wide open. You see my mother had a whole range of illnesses and diseases, including cancer, and having always been told “ooo don’t you look like your Mom”, it seemed all too easy to assume that I would follow in her footsteps. In fact, a few years ago I was on the receiving end of a list of symptoms that could have resulted in a similarly too- short lifespan, having lost my Mom at just 56 years old.

Now here’s the thing …. although there is a strong link to your genes in determining your likelihood of developing certain diseases, it is definitely not the whole story.

So, if you have been following me for a while, you will know that:

  1. I believe we should stop treating symptoms and start building good health

  2. Inflammation is at the root of almost all disease

  3. Self care is essential. It is your responsibility.

  4. Wellbeing is a mind-body-soul thing.

It all starts with awareness.

I like to think of this like a waterfall tumbling into a giant pool of water. The water jumbles around as we watch from the sidelines luring us to jump in. We experience the energy in the water as it knocks us and rolls us around; upside down, sometimes pulling us underneath the surface. Initially, we may enjoy the experience, as we ignore any notices that warn us of staying in for too long, but after a while we may begin to feel uncomfortable. We realise that it is suddenly too late to get back out onto the safety of the shore. Panic ensues and we find ourselves falling into the scary, dark, cold, deep depths. How we wish that we had been more aware of taking adequate care and heeding the warning signs?

It’s a bit like the choices that we make in our lives and the things that have happened to us along the way. All of these add to our own waterfall and determine the nature of the pool of water we find ourselves in. If we have taken along the traumas of our own childhood, the unhealed parts of our ancestors, the bad habits that have gotten out of hand, our pool of water is turbulent, unforgiving and will eventually be the end of us.

Sound dramatic?

Yes …. it does, but if we become more aware of the elements that are affecting our daily lives, paying attention to how our mind and bodies feel, creating lifestyle changes that we can sustain easily, taking time for mindfulness, devoting energy to exercise and eating well, being with likeminded people, finding a purpose in life, (you know all this already) then we are more likely to fall into a beautiful, calm, blue, warm, swirling vortex of water.

But what if your pool is already too dark and cold?

Then you need to look upstream. Go and take a peek at what may have occurred 2 months, 2 years, 20 years ago. We don’t develop diseases overnight. There will always be a trigger, a reason, a situation, that has thrown your body out of balance, caused an inflammatory response and resulted in the symptoms that you are experiencing. If you do have a genetic disposition to a certain disease, than keeping an eye upstream is even more important for you.

Here are some examples:

  • The CEO of a large conglomerate finds himself unable to concentrate. He is worried about dementia and cognitive decline but there is no reason found by the medics. However, 3 years prior to this, he had a flood in his basement and as a result black spores where left behind hidden in the walls. This mould was affecting him so badly and he had absolutely no idea. He made a full recovery once this was corrected. *

We know of the importance of good gut health and increasingly there is evidence that it has an effect on the likelihood of developing a whole range of diseases.

  • Parkinson’s disease is just one example as it is the gut that controls brain function. An imbalance of the microbiome in some people can result in a key protein getting mis-folded; twisted in such a way that it causes inflammation in the substantia nigra, the part of the brain involved in Parkinson’s disease. It gets mis-folded by bad bacteria in the gut and it can take 20 years for symptoms to develop. Interestingly, a large study showed that 80-90% of Parkinson’s sufferers had suffered long-term constipation. *

  • Artificial sweeteners cause a similar imbalance in the microbiome. These toxins wipe out the good bacteria and encourage the growth of a lot of bad bacteria in your gut. This then creates proteins that carry messages for obesity and the hoarding of calories. *

If only we had known about microbiome reset programmes earlier.

The effect of our unconscious mind on disease is well spoken about by luminaries such as Louise Hay, Joe Dispenza and, in this case Gabor Mate.

  • Women with breast cancer, who don’t know how to express anger, have been shown to have diminished activity of a group of immune cells called natural killer cells. Natural killer cells attack foreign bacteria, virus and also malignant cells. have been able to increase the natural killer cells. In other words, they protect our boundaries. Women who don’t know how to express their boundaries emotionally, they suppress their boundaries immunologically, and therefore they’re more likely to develop disease.” **

What is more significant about all this new knowledge is that the habits that we and our children are developing are causing epigenetic changes that will be passed down to future generations. So it is not only about making allowances and taking precautions for already existing, inherited or known disease patterns but taking responsibility for the new potential forms of altered states. For example, there is much concern over the future influence of technology on the way we live. We will see increasingly clever inventions that may have a detrimental effect on our health in the long term that may look quite innocuous. Smart phones, e-cigs, apps that help us lose weight or need more sleep.

If we continue to be unaware of what is occurring upstream; take our eyes off what is happening with the natural balance and flow of our world, we are much more likely to cause a flood, overwhelm our river, waterfall and pool and find ourselves out of our depth.
