3 Essential Things you need to know about Supplementation.
Have you ever wandered into high street pharmacy or supplement stores, such as Boots or Holland and Barrett and felt over-whelmed by the choice on the shelves? Or do you find yourself throwing in the odd multivitamin or omega 3 product into your supermarket shopping trolley?
Or maybe you have a friend who has started a home-based business and has invited you to an evening where you can buy some products?
Or perhaps you are an online shopper, and order your vitamins and minerals from one or more websites? (I have just typed “supplements” into my google search engine. Give it a go. It came up with “About 177 million results in 0.5 seconds”)
I had a piece of research done in 2015 by an associate from Northampton University about supplementation habits in the UK, and the results are interesting. 43% of adults supplement daily, and 83% of the UK population take supplements periodically.
There is no doubt that this is big business but here’s the thing. As Lynda Hammonds, Vice President of Quality Assurance & Regulatory Affairs for the largest herbal supplement manufacturer worldwide, Nature’s Sunshine Products and SynergyWorldwide states, “The Supplement industry is a bit like the wild-west but without a sheriff.”
An estimated 85% of supplements on the market today are so called “white label” products. Made by manufacturers and distributed to companies to be own branded. It seems that many of these are increasingly being manufactured in the USA and China, and usually there is little quality testing or control of potency, efficacy or quality. Often-times products contain bulking agents such as talc and wood pulp, colourings and flavourings and are easily contaminated with heavy metals, dirt, soil and pesticide or herbicide residue.
So, here is tip NO 1
Source the highest quality, organic natural supplements you can. (Read your labels and do your research.)
But even if you are confident about the quality of what you are taking, how do you know if it is right for you? How do you know that what you buy is what you NEED rather than the latest daily/weekly or monthly offer? Does the website/supermarket/shop/sales rep care about your health? Is there an analysis of your body/current health state? Does the product contain the right active ingredients in the correct bio available formations? Is it compatible with any current medications you are taking? Is there a regular review of your supplement regime?
Look out for programmes not just products. Ask for the science behind anything you take, and check out the company too. (This is why i use and recommend SynergyWorldwide as they come up roses on all counts.

Tip No 2
Work with a Nutritional Supplementation Coach and undertake an analysis tool that you can use, firstly to determine your needs and, secondly to track your progress.
I was at a talk recently that featured a testimony from a lady who had been taking joint support supplements for Arthritis containing Glucosamine, Chondroitin and MSM, for 7 years since her retirement as a post-lady, She had become increasingly unwell, was housebound, unable to do her own housework even and in constant pain. She met a colleague of mine who undertook a health analysis and put together a programme of supplementation for her and suggested some dietary changes. I met the lady 7 months into her programme and she walked into the talk in high heels, was back gardening and doing her own shopping and was enjoying her sessions again at the gym and even taking Zumba classes!! Most remarkably, one of the supplements in her programme contained Glucosamine, Chondroitin and MSM!! (This just illustrates that not all supplements are equal). She is so passionate about the improvement in her health that she has begun to study nutritional therapy and has already committed to keeping up her eating and supplement regime. Once you find a programme that works for you, stay on track.
